From October 21st to October 25th, 2018, the 4th International Conference on High Energy Density Physics was held at the Shangri-La International Hotel in Ningbo. More than 30 famous scholars from the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Japan, Czech and other countries, as well as more than 150 experts, scholars and students from China attended the conference during these four days.

 The conference was co-sponsored by the Center for Applied Physics and Technology of Peking University, the Center for Fusion Theory and Simulation of Zhejiang University and the Center for Advanced Material Testing Technology of Shenzhen Technology University. The President of the Conference is Academician Xiantu He, honorary director of Center for Applied Physics and Technology of Peking University. Riccardo Betti, professor of Department of Physics and Astronomy of University of Rochester, Academician Jie Zhang, former President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shuangchen Ruan, director of Shenzhen Technology University (in planning), are the co-chairmen of the Conference.

At the opening ceremony, Academician Xiantu He extended a warm welcome to the participants, introducing the purpose and development history of the International Conference on High Energy Density Physics, and demonstrated the significant developments in the High Energy Density Physics of Peking University in recent years. The conference has invited a number of top experts and academic leaders in relevant fields at home and abroad to take advantage of the excellent international communication platform created by renowned universities and international conferences. The purpose of the conference is to promote the exchanges and cooperation between scholars at home and abroad, attract more young scholars to invest in the field of High Energy Density Physics, promote the scientific development of High Energy Density, and contribute to the development of national science and high technology. Following the success of the three International Conferences on High Energy Density Physics held at Peking University and Southern University of Science and Technology in 2012, 2014 and 2016, respectively, the 4th International Conference on High Energy Density Physics is held in response to the current research prospects and needs in this field. The main topics include inertial confinement fusion physics, laser plasma interaction, interaction of strong and short pulsed lasers with matter, high energy density material properties, experimental astrophysics, compressible turbulence and hydrodynamic instability. Within three days, 14 plenary talks, 45 invited reports, 37 oral reports, and 30 paste reports were conducted

The chairman of the conference, Academician Xiantu He, stressed that High Energy Density Physics is the international frontier discipline that has attracted much attention in recent years. He hoped that the 4th International Conference on High Energy Density Physics would further promote China's international influence in this field, provide the opportunities of communication and collaboration for High-energy density scientists from the whole country, and establish a strong foundation for further access to the first-class academic and scientific research capabilities.

The conference was supported by Zhejiang University, Shenzhen Technology University, Thales and Amplitude.

The conference organizer, Center for Applied Physics and Technology of Peking University was established on December 23, 2007. It has undertaken more than 70 major research projects related to high energy density physics research, and has achieved a number of high-level research results. It has published more than 1,200 SCI academic papers and became one of the main research bases in the field of High Energy Density Physics in China. It has a great influence in the international academic community.

Current main research directions include: inertial confinement fusion physics, strong laser material interaction, laboratory astrophysics, high energy density material properties, new material exploration and simulation design, compressible fluid turbulence and hydrodynamic instability, computational science Wait, etc. On the basis of the center, the Key Laboratory of High Energy Density Physical Numerical Simulation of the Ministry of Education, the Engineering Application Basic Technology Base (Peking University), and the Beijing University Sub-center of the Ministry of Education's Inertial Fusion Science and Application (IFSA) Center were approved.

From October 18th to 21st, 2012, the first International Conference on High Energy Density Physics (1st ICHEDP) was successfully held in Zhongguanyuan Global Village of Peking University. It was the first international conference on High Energy Density Physics in China. On September 21-24, 2014, the 2nd International Conference on High Energy Density Physics (2nd ICHEDP) was also successfully held in Peking University. On September 23-25, 2016, the 3rd International Conference on High Energy Density Physics (3rd ICHEDP) was successfully held at Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen. Since then, the series of ICEIDP international conferences has gained a good international reputation. It is a new international exchange platform recognized and promoted by High Energy Density Physics researchers at home and abroad.
